GPPU Seminar
The creation of the elements
Steven Karataglidis
(University of Johannesburg, South Africa)
Date
10:00-12:00, November 20th, 2017Place
Room N204, Science Complex C (H-04) mapAbstract
Stars are the environments for the creation of the elements up to iron and nickel. Beyond that, one needs to have an explosive environment in order to cause the fusion to create the heavier elements. With the very recent discovery of a neutron star merger, we may be on the cusp of identifying such regions. This lecture will cover the nuclear processes from the pp chain through to the r-process, at a (largely) conceptual level, and discuss the important issues regarding Nuclear Astrophysics.Point
