// 最初はPHENIXの方を主に担当していました。

// プログラムについてもグループ全体の

Dear friends,

Kazuhiro Kaimi, a granduated student of Hiroshima University has passed away at 6:30am on 22nd Nov. in Hopital de la Tour in Geneve by an accident during his work for NA44 at CERN. He was 24 years old. His parents and young brother have arrived on 22nd evening... His body goes back to Hiroshima with his parents in the same flight, leaving for Osaka on 28th. The funeral services would be anticipated on Sunday, 1st of Dec. (not confirmed) It is very hard, but I have to announce this very sad fact to you.

It seems he has not told anything to his parents about his life at CERN, especially his travel in the US in the last summer. If you have spent time with him, telling to the parents about how you enjoyed and/or worked with him would be very much appreciated.

Sincerely,&br;
Toru Sugitate

Enclosed you see what Toru Sugitate knew at CERN as of 27th Nov. 1996.

On 19th evening, Kazuhiro took a dinner with Hiroaki, another NA44 colleague of Hiroshima, and drove back alone by himself to his CERN office in Meyrin side, after Hiroaki getting off at their apartment in Ferney. He logged in computers at 22:27 and continued working and submitting many jobs until at least 01:41am, when he changed his last file and saved. Dustmen found him pinned down between a drivers door and the car body on a slope next the garage, in front of his office, Rm.1-1-37, and called pompier at 04:45am. The car was pushed toward the concrete wall at a shallow angle, heading to the wall. A CERN guardman came in next, and pulled the car back and rescued him from the car. He was moved to the Hopital de la Tour at around 5am. Once he woke up from a serious condition and explained to a doctor about what was happened to him last night.

He tried to startup the engine of a blue (white) Renault car, but could not. He tried to push-start the engine using the slope. The car was going down, but moved left and pinned him down between the driver's door and the body. He could not get out from the car. He continued for hours crying for help, but none there.

That night was around freezing and rained a little. It was confirmed that the car battery was totall flat. There is scratch on the concrete wall for 2-3m long toward down and a side protection of the door is scratched hard.

Dr.Thorens of Hopital de la Tour explained to his parents that when he was moved in the hospital, his temperature was 30 deg. Doctor supposes his temperature must be much lower when he was found. His heart and all internals were seriously failing due to too low temp. The worst was plasma in blood became solidified in his body and stopped blood fluidizing. His lever stopped functioning and his kidneys and lung failed due to the lever failures. There were only small mechanical damages seen by an ultrasonic scanner, when he was moved in hospital. No internal bleeding in his lever or kidneys. The doctor clearly concluded he was killed by COLD, though he did not know why it was happened.

It was with great sorrow that the members of the NA44 Collaboration learned of the death of our colleague, Kazuhiro Kaimi, following a serious accident on Wednesday 20th November.

He was only 24 years old, in his second year as a Ph. D. student from Hiroshima University but there were already indications that a great future lay ahead of him. We all counted on his excellent work both in the analysis of the NA44 data as well as part of the data- taking team.

He was extremely well liked and appreciated by all of us and will be remembered as a hard-working yet fun-loving, gifted young physicist. We will sorely miss him and our deep sympathy goes out to his colleagues in Hiroshima and especially to his family.

We would like to extend our sincere appreciation to the CERN community for their overwhelming response to the request for blood donors.

Friends and colleagues of the NA44 Collaboration
