Our Home Galaxy, the Milky Way: Past, Present and Future

The Milky Way Galaxy, our place in the Universe, continues to provide new insights into how galaxies in general form and evolve, and the role of dark matter in those processes. I will first discuss how we can use the properties of stars similar to the Sun to infer important events in its past, then the evidence for on-going interactions with neighboring galaxies that are distorting the Milky Way's shape and influencing the rate at which stars are formed. I will also discuss possible future paths for the different components of the Milky Way, driven by our dynamic neighborhood, the Local Group.
