From Electric Dipole Moments to the Hidden Universe

Abstract

The Standard Model of particle physics has achieved remarkable success in describing the fundamental laws of nature, yet it leaves many profound mysteries unanswered, including the naturalness problem of the Higgs boson, the identity of dark matter and the origin of matter-antimatter asymmetry of the Universe. Many ideas for physics beyond the Standard Model to address these questions predict new sources of CP violation, asymmetry between matter and antimatter, making electric dipole moments (EDMs) exceptionally sensitive probes of new physics. In this talk, we will discuss how the search for the electron EDM provides a unique window into new physics at energy scales far beyond the reach of present-day colliders. We will then turn to the neutron EDM, whose extraordinary smallness leads to the strong CP problem—one of the deepest puzzles in particle physics. This puzzle has inspired fascinating ideas such as the axion and spontaneous CP violation. We will discuss recent developments including new approaches to solving the cosmological challenges of the axion and the possibility that spontaneous CP violation leaves the observable neutron EDM signal even when new particles are beyond the direct reach of experiments. The quest to understand why EDMs are so small may lead us to the hidden Universe beyond the Standard Model.
