A New Era of Galaxy Evolution with JWST

The field of astronomy has advanced through observations. Landmark discoveries, including the expansion of the Universe and the timeline of cosmic reionization, have shaped our theoretical framework and deepened our understanding of the Universe. Since its launch in 2021, the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has ushered in a transformative era in the exploration of the early Universe. With its unprecedented sensitivity in the near- and mid-infrared, JWST enables direct observations of galaxies within the first few hundred million years after the Big Bang, extending well beyond the limits previously reached by any existing telescopes. In this talk, I will start with a broad introduction of extragalactic studies in the last two decades. Then, I will review recent observational advances enabled by large telescopes and JWST, including the discovery of candidate first galaxies at extreme redshifts, evidence for rapid chemical enrichment, and the emergence of large-scale structure in the early Universe. I will discuss the implications of these findings for our understanding of the formation of the first stars and the assembly of massive galaxies. Finally, I will introduce ongoing efforts and future prospects for the spectroscopic confirmation and detailed characterization of primordial systems—the holy grail of observational studies of galaxy formation.
